Champions League: Lionel Messi hat-trick sends Barcelona waltzing past Manchester City

Scoring Seventh Champions League hat-trick, Lionel Messi reminds the world that he is the best. His 37th Barcelona hat-trick set the Catalan side on its way to a comprehensive four-goal win, leaving Guardiola with plenty to ponder ahead of the return fixture in November.

Messi pounced on a Fernandinho slip to nudge Barca in front on 17 minutes, and the Argentine doubled his tally on the hour mark following the dismissal of City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Then he swept in a third on 69 minutes to complete a second straight hat-trick in Europe, while Barca also finished the game a man down after substitute Jeremy Mathieu picked up a second booking.

It’s the second time Guardiola has returned to Barca since leaving in 2012 and it was the second time he’s been humbled by his former pupil, Messi. The Argentine scored two against the Catalan’s Bayern side and his hat trick here took him to six goals in just two Champions League games this season.
